Suzuki Hyōsaku is the name of a master lacquer artist who carried on the traditions of the Hyō school in Kyoto lacquer art. The first Suzuki Hyōsaku (1874–1943) studied under the second-generation Kimura Hyōsai, mastered the traditional techniques of Kyoto lacquerwork, and demonstrated exceptional skill by undertaking lacquerwork for the sacred treasures of Ise Grand Shrine and for the Imperial Coronation Ceremony. His skill and spirit were passed down to the second and third generations, evolving from traditional tea ceremony utensils and vessels to contemporary expressions of lacquer art. The third-generation Hyosaku, in particular, has expanded the possibilities of lacquer art by incorporating new materials such as acrylic resin.

What one senses when viewing the works of Suzuki Hyosaku is that the beauty of the lacquer is not displayed through excessive ornamentation, but is quietly brought out by the lustre of the finish and the form of the vessel itself. The deep hues of black and vermilion lacquer possess a unique depth that shifts with the play of light, and when placed in a tea ceremony setting, they possess an understated elegance that complements the surrounding utensils. To me, Hyosaku’s works possess the refined grace characteristic of Kyoto lacquer art, whilst retaining a certain warmth and the tactile quality of handcrafted work. I believe that the fact that his works gain even more character with use is a major part of their appeal.
