Yumeji Takehisa (1884–1934) was a painter, poet and designer born in Okayama Prefecture who was most active during the Taishō era. Whilst he is widely known for his depictions of slender, somewhat melancholic women—often referred to as ‘Yumeji-style beauties’—his work extended far beyond Japanese painting and illustration. He was involved in a wide range of fields, including magazine and sheet music covers, book design, posters and the design of everyday objects, thereby bridging the gap between art and everyday life. He is not only a symbol of Taishō Romanticism but also a figure who exerted a significant influence on modern Japanese graphic design.

When viewing Yumeji’s works, it is not so much the figures of the women depicted as the sense of loneliness and dreamlike atmosphere that pervades the scenes that lingers in the mind. His lines are fine and soft, and his depictions of facial expressions are understated; yet, it is precisely this subtlety that allows powerful emotions to shine through. Yumeji’s paintings do not merely depict the surface of a glamorous era; rather, they feel like works that transform the longing and loneliness harboured deep within the human heart into gentle forms. I believe it is precisely this delicate sensibility that remains a major source of appeal, continuing to captivate so many people to this day.
