Seiji Togo (1897–1978) was a Western-style painter born in Kagoshima Prefecture who was active primarily within the Nika-kai art group. In his youth, he experimented with avant-garde styles; following a period in France, he developed his own distinctive style centred on depictions of women with slender, supple figures and large eyes. He was also involved in book design and murals, and was widely appreciated for his work in both painting and design.

His depictions of women exude elegance and approachability, yet one also senses a quiet melancholy, as if detached from reality. It is striking how he created a distinctive world—one instantly recognisable as his own—whilst boldly simplifying forms. Dreams and yearnings linger within his soft colour palette.
