Takayama Kimura (1876–1942) was a Japanese-style painter born in Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture, who was active from the Meiji period through to the early Shōwa period. He studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and participated in the activities of the Japan Art Institute under Tenshin Okakura. He tackled a wide range of subjects, including flowers and birds, figures and Buddhist paintings; in his Buddhist works in particular, he created compositions that convey a sense of calm spirituality amidst their vibrant colours. Takayama’s distinctive style lies in his ability to incorporate a modern sensibility whilst cherishing traditional Japanese painting techniques.

When viewing Kimura Takeyama’s works, one notices that, despite the use of vivid colours, they never give a garish impression; rather, a quiet dignity is maintained throughout the composition. His flowers and figures possess a gentle aura, whilst his Buddhist paintings exude a serenity akin to prayer. Takeyama’s paintings appear to harmonise splendour and tranquillity simultaneously. A major source of their appeal lies in the gentle gaze, imbued with reverence for his subjects, which can be sensed beneath his meticulous brushwork.
