Teshirō Gomi (1918–2004) was a Western-style painter born in Tokyo. He studied at the Kawabata Art School and the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, and continued to create art primarily as a member of the Issui-kai group. He travelled to Europe to further his studies in Paris, and left behind a large body of work centred on still lifes—such as flowers, fruit and vases—in which he calmly observed the forms and colours of his subjects.

His paintings of flowers and vessels are largely free from flamboyant effects; as a result, the texture of each individual object is conveyed with great care. Rather than merely arranging still lifes in an orderly fashion, he placed great importance on the interplay of colours and the spatial intervals between objects; his ability to imbue everyday objects with a quiet dignity is what makes his work so compelling.
