Takahashi Dohachi is a renowned name in Kyo-yaki pottery, a tradition passed down in Kyoto since the late Edo period. In particular, the second-generation Dohachi was famed as ‘Ninami Dohachi’ and produced a wide range of pottery, primarily centred on the Kiyomizu Gojo-zaka area. Whilst studying the superb designs of his predecessors, such as Ninsei and Kenzan, he demonstrated his skill across a diverse range of fields—including coloured-glaze ware, blue-and-white porcelain, Raku ware, sencha tea sets and tea ceremony utensils—and was also involved in the production of garden pottery in various regions. His works are characterised not only by the refinement typical of Kyoto ware but also by a sense of approachability and nonchalance.

What one senses when viewing his works is that, rather than emphasising technical prowess, he prioritises the joy of using the vessels and the pleasure of admiring them. Pieces depicting flowers, people and animals possess a gentle, playful quality, whilst even his formal tea ceremony utensils retain a warm character. I believe the great appeal of Takahashi Dohachi lies in his deep understanding of the classics and his ability to reinterpret them with a light touch, guided by his own sensibility.
