Atsuko Tanaka (1932–2005) was an avant-garde artist born in Osaka who was active within the Gutai Art Association. She is best known for her *Electric Dress*, in which she wore a garment made of numerous light bulbs and electrical wires; later in her career, she produced paintings featuring circles and lines in vivid colours, reminiscent of wiring diagrams. She was an artist who transformed the sensations of the body, light, electricity and the city into her own unique visual forms.

The lines and circles that traverse the canvas possess a vital movement reminiscent of electric currents, blood vessels or cells. Whilst employing mechanical forms, her work lacks any sense of coldness; the colours react with one another, making the entire canvas seem to pulsate. Its appeal lies in the way it transformed the new sensibilities of post-war life into a vibrant rhythm.
