Asakura Isokichi (1913–1998) was a leading Kutani ware potter from Ishikawa Prefecture. Having studied under the first-generation Tokuda Yasoichi and Kitade Tōjirō, he built upon the traditional Kutani ware colour-painting techniques whilst incorporating new colours, designs and methods in keeping with the times, thereby pioneering a modern world of Kutani ware. His glazing techniques, which evoke a sense of grandeur and depth reminiscent of the cosmos, can be seen as the culmination of generations of original craftsmanship. His artistic style evolved from colour painting based on yellow and green tones to the use of platinum in his later years, and finally to expressions using white glaze. He served as a member of the Japan Art Academy and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1996.

Isoichi Asazō’s works possess the vibrant colours characteristic of Kutani ware, yet they also exhibit a dignity and vigour that transcend mere ornamentation, as well as a mysterious charm reminiscent of a cosmic perspective. In his works, which feature bold compositions of natural landscapes, plants and birds, the surface of the vessel itself feels like a painting. In particular, his later silver-glazed works possess a sense of tranquillity and refinement amidst their splendour, strongly reflecting the artist’s commitment not merely to preserving tradition, but to constantly seeking new forms of beauty.
