Katayama Nanpū (1887–1980) was born in Kumamoto Prefecture and is regarded as one of the leading figures in modern Japanese painting. After moving to Tokyo, he was recognised by Yokoyama Taikan and was active primarily within the Japan Art Institute. He tackled a wide range of subjects, including figures, flowers and birds, and landscapes. Building upon the foundations of traditional Japanese painting techniques, he established his own distinctive style characterised by bright, clear colours and fluid compositions. In his later years, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1968.

Nampū’s works possess a distinct sense of presence within their serene compositions—a quality that can only come from someone who has gazed intently at his subjects for a long time. His figures exude a quiet dignity, whilst his depictions of flowers and birds naturally convey the breath of life. To me, Nampū’s paintings do not make a forceful statement; rather, they seem to linger gently in the viewer’s heart as he meticulously arranges colours and forms. I believe their greatest charm lies in the warmth that lies within their refined elegance.
