Maeda Seison (1885–1977) was born in Gifu Prefecture and is regarded as one of the leading figures in modern Japanese painting. He studied under Kajita Hanko and was active primarily within the Japan Art Institute. He is particularly renowned for his works depicting historical figures and military commanders; after thorough research into classical texts and historical records, he captured not only the characters’ personalities but also the tension of the scenes on canvas. As seen in his masterpiece *Yoritomo in the Cave*, a key characteristic of his work is the use of powerful lines and subdued colours, which infuse his historical paintings with a contemporary sensibility. In 1955, he was awarded the Order of Culture.

When viewing Seison’s works, one senses a perspective that seeks to portray historical figures not merely as heroes, but as individual human beings. There is a quiet tension in the figures’ expressions and postures; rather than focusing on flamboyant scenes, the works seem to convey the era in which the figures lived and their inner psychological states. I believe the unique charm of Maeda Seison lies in his approach of depicting the inner strength and solitude of his subjects, rather than merely embellishing history as a narrative.
