Yuto Nakaji (1933–2017) was a Japanese-style painter born in Kyoto who continued to paint scenes centred on the natural landscapes of Shiga. He studied at Kyoto City University of Arts and exhibited primarily at the Nitten. By meticulously observing familiar landscapes—such as the countryside, lakeshores and mountain ranges around Lake Biwa—he developed a unique style of landscape painting characterised by gentle colours and balanced compositions, whilst avoiding flamboyant effects. With a deep understanding of the climate and landscape of Ōmi, where he lived for many years, he quietly captured the region’s distinctive light and the changing seasons on canvas.

When viewing Yuto Nakaji’s works, one realises that there is a rich beauty even in the unassuming landscapes that are not designated as special places of scenic interest. Although the rice paddies, lakes and distant mountains are depicted with a sense of tranquillity, there is a depth to them that allows one to sense even the seasonal humidity and the temperature of the wind. It feels as though the works are imbued with intimate memories of the landscape—memories that can only be captured by someone who has observed the land over a long period of time. The profound nostalgia and warmth found within this tranquillity are the great appeal of Yuto Nakaji’s art.
