A Historical Experience in Mibu, Kyoto: Tracing the Footsteps of the Shinsengumi The Shinsengumi shook Kyoto during the Bakumatsu period. This program offers a wealth of activities, including guided tours of Mibu-dera Temple—the group’s headquarters—and the Historical Museum, as well as visits to the former residences where the members lived. There’s also a special guided tour where you’ll visit the shops of dealers alongside an expert well-versed in the art market. With expert appraisals and commentary, you can experience that turbulent era firsthand through swords, ancient documents, and everyday household items from the period. From the architectural beauty of the temple—also known as the setting for Mibu Kyogen—to the precious artifacts housed in the museum and the intricate spatial layout of the traditional townhouses, this is an experience that encapsulates Kyoto’s history and aesthetics.
